Dj Green Lantern wins big this year courtesy of MTV News.com

Dj Green Lantern wins big this year courtesy of MTV News.com…in their year-end Mixtape Monday report, MTV News.com has named Dj Green Lantern Mixtape Dj of the Year (along side Dj Drama) ..The “Evil Genius” was also named Satellite Radio Dj of the Year (he shares the award with Dj Whoo Kid) for his Sirius/Xm Hip-Hop Nation “Invasion Radio” show –which airs Mondays 10pm EST…

“Green Lantern as the radio/ satellite DJ of the Year for me wasn’t a big question. If you turn to Channel 40 on Mondays, you’ll hear something original you wish you had a MP3 of. Besides helping Nas have a much improved stage show this year, putting together two of the top ten mixtapes this year (Ni**er Mixtape and Bar Exam 2) and keeping the beats fresh, the Evil one’s satellite radio show really solidified itself as the home of the spitters.

Much like Mixtape Monday tries to do (isn’t it dope how both our shows are on Monday?), Lantern used his time on the airwaves to give the fans what they really want, rappers rapping. You’ll hear rappers putting their hearts in the art with off-the-dome (sometimes) material just for the streets. Green and Team Invasion’s “Ondapsot Freestyle,” sessions/ciphers took me back to a classic time in hip-hop where you could turn the dial and hear Red Alert, Stretch and Bobbito, or Sway, King and DJ Revolution opening their mics up to MCs and having the artists prove why they are masters of the craft.

What I love about Green’s show is it practices no discretion. I mean that in the best way. It feels frees, spontaneous. Where else can you hear legends such as Nas, Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes rifle off rhymes as well have newer guys such as a Charles Hamilton and Corey Gunz or the nice underdogs of the game; I.E. Joe Budden, Styles P, Beanie Sigel, or Crooked I?

So Green congrats and salute. You remain one of the consistently dope people in the game. My requests for 2009 are a Green Lantern/ Kanye West mixtape, a Champ is Here Part 2, Bar Exam 3 (part 2 was real classic material), Green Lantern/ Wu-Tang (just for the love of the game) and dare I ask for… Dare I ask for another Team Invasion/Shady/Aftermath/ G-Unit Mixtape? I still rock those original Invasion joints.

FUTURE GREEN ENTERTAINMENT SIGN JOHNNY POLYGON

DJ GREEN LANTERN’S FUTURE GREEN ENTERTAINMENT IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF JOHNNY POLYGON

Do you know where your girlfriend is right now? Probably the same place you left your wallet, with Johnny Polygon? What can you say about Johnny that won’t make a person laugh, cry, sigh or have the cops knocking on your door at 6 in the morning asking where you were the night before. Johnny Polygon is an experience. Starting as a b-boy and break-dancer in his youth because it looked fun, then witnessing the art of rapping and just knowing that he could do it better than the local talent that surrounded him. That may seem cocky, but Johnny, at age 14 possessed a natural talent that grew in the modest city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Raw and untrained he had the ear to find the right beat and turn it into a canvas for his stories.

Cram Slick Rick, Tupac and Eminem into a sock and beat the Pixies to death with it, sprinkling their ashes over Freddy Mercury and Kirk Cobain, then somehow impregnating Lauren Hill with the fodder, the resulting child might have a chance of entering the same school as Johnny Polygon, but definitely wouldn’t be in the same class. Armed with razor wit and defiant pride, Johnny participated in local theater groups and rap battles helping him develop a sense of stage presence and projection. Surviving on the underground Midwest scene for several years amassing self-released albums, Johnny headed out to the west coast, doubling his back catalog of recorded music with potent Hip Hop and indie R&B tracks.

Johnny Polygon has enjoyed every stage he’s stepped on including the Knitting Factory and the Roxy. He has opened for De La Soul, KRS-1 and The Beatnuts. Received personal compliments from Ice Cube, DMC of Run DMC and Mark Ronson. He’s now working with notable DJ / Producer DJ Green Lantern, whom “discovered” him on MusicNation.com where Johnny placed as a semifinalist in a competition out of hundreds of other talented rappers. Most recently Johnny Polygon has signed with DJ Green Lantern and Future Green Entertainment recording songs for the Grand Theft Auto 4 video game and a full length album / mix tape titled “Wolf In Cheap Clothing.”

Constantly writing and creating music, Johnny’s talent inspires those who choose to work with him. With all of these positive events happening, Johnny Polygon is getting ready for bigger and better things. The future is bright and I can’t wait to see what else comes our way. But as for trying to find out what happened to your wallet and girlfriend, don’t try calling Johnny cause Johnny don’t have a phone.

Review from Rap Reviews below:

So “Nigger” switches to “Untitled” - and here is the mixtape primer to stir up anticipation for the album, something that Nas doesn’t really do. Put together BRILLIANTLY by DJ Green Lantern (and that means something coming from the extra-critical me), it features at least three songs that should definitely appear on the “Nigger” album - I mean, “Untitled” album. Plus awesome and thought-provoking skits, samples and generally wicked songs. All in all, this will probably get spun more on certain iPods more than “Tha Carter III” and “Seeing Sounds” over the next few weeks - well, until the “Nigger” album drops. Sorry, I meant “Untitled” album.

This won’t be an extensive review, since even though it may be dope as hell, it remains a specific mixtape promo for the true “Nigger” album (oops, I did it again). We will save the real meat and veg for the official album RapReview, but I strongly suggest that you get a hold of “The Nigger Tape” in advance. It features the solid “N.I.G.G.E.R. (Slave & Master),” the wicked “Be A Nigger Too (Remix)” (watch the original’s stunning epic eight minute video ASAP) and the first commercial single “Hero,” with guest Keri Hilson and a pounding Polow Da Don beat. “Hero” is pretty much a flawless first single for the “Nigger” LP, insofar as the instrumental is HARD but melodic, the chorus catchy but not cheesy, and the single commercial enough to get spins, but not so much that it would dilute the concept of the album.

You may well have heard “Black President,” the interesting Obama song - not a cow-towing ode, but an inspirational analysis. Perhaps the only perplexing song is “Legendary (Mike Tyson)” - an actual ode to Tyson, and it probably shouldn’t be on the real album. Standout tracks include the stic.man (of Dead Prez fame) collabo “Association” and the soulful “Ghetto (Remix)” with a brilliant Joell Ortiz guest verse. If these kinds of tracks aren’t making the cut for the “Nigger” LP, then it is time to get excited.

As if Nas fans need more geeing up, there is a lovely touch at the end - the eight minute “Timeline” finds snippets of classic Nas tracks chopped up and commentated on by a Nasir Jones so relaxed, he is practically Winehouse’d up in hospital (get well soon, darling). To other hip hop heads that aren’t massive Nas fans, it might make them realise just how important the Queensbridge MC is to hip hop - and if Jones can commit to the “Nigger” concept completely, and execute it to the best of his abilities (over dope beats, of course), then we could be in for something special here, people. Stay tuned for the full length “Nigger” album. Sorry, “Untitled” album (whatever).
